Wellbeing: Unlock True Mental Health

When people say they want to be happy, what they really mean is they want greater wellbeing. In fact, wellbeing is the key to true mental health.

As a team of psychologists working in the area of preventive psychology, we prefer to use the term ‘wellbeing’ when describing ‘mental health’. Why? Because the term ‘mental health’ has come to be associated with its opposite: mental ill-health. And also - because true mental health is about more than just your mind. In other words, it isn’t just about mental phenomena.

Wellbeing is about all the things that impact your overall energy, functioning, and quality of life.

So rather than simply looking to one’s mood as an indicator of whether you are mentally healthy (hint: your mood is only one indicator out of many that tells you if you’re mentally healthy, and it is not normal to feel happy 24/7!), we need to look to multiple ingredients that determine your wellbeing.

At Healthy Minds, we’ve done the scientific detective work to find out what the evidence says are the main ingredients to wellbeing. And we provide wellbeing workshops, mental health programs and digital self-paced courses that are designed to teach you how to become an effective self-manager of your wellbeing.

What Do We Mean By Wellbeing?

We found good scientific evidence for six key wellbeing factors that we know cause good mental health. By cultivating these six things - within an individual or an organisation - you create a tank of resources… the mental, physical and emotional energy that we all need to thrive. This is where good mental health comes from; it is also the foundation of peak performance. Incorporating biological, psychological, and social elements, the six wellbeing factors in the Healthy Minds Wellbeing Wheel are:

• Primary Relationships

• Biological Needs and Bodily Health

• Exercise

• Psychological Skills

• Fun, Interests and Social Life

• Values, Meaning and Purpose

Our Wellbeing Programs

At Healthy Minds, we strongly believe that true mental health requires more than just feel-good approaches, positive thinking, or short-term solutions. The truth is, it’s normal to have ‘bad days’ and not feel good 24/7. However, the foundation of mental health and an improved quality of life starts with your personal wellbeing. That’s why we teach the psychological skills that enhance mental health and wellbeing. Including:

Seven Secrets to a Healthy Mind

Now run with over 25,000 people worldwide, and with more than 98%+ of participants recommending it to others, this interactive 2-hour workshop (or digital, self-paced equivalent) teaches the psychological skills featured in our award-winning research at Flinders University. This is the toolkit of psychological skills demonstrated to prevent the onset of symptoms of anxiety and depression, to reduce risk for eating disorders. At the same time, participants learn how to build their overall mental health, wellbeing and resilience.

Wellbeing Strategies for Challenging Times

This 1-hour session is designed to provide teams with practical strategies to deal with current stressors and challenges. Whether facing world events, corporate restructures, or other significant challenges, the application of a set of specific wellbeing strategies can help staff navigate these challenging times effectively, while maintaining a high level of wellbeing.

Sleep Secrets

Inadequate sleep is a risk factor for reduced productivity, workplace injury, as well as anxiety and depression. But did you know healthy sleep is a skill that can be learned? In Sleep Secrets, we bring you the very latest in sleep psychology tips to help you sleep well, consistently.

The Power of Purpose

Organisations devote a significant amount of time strategising about their corporate and brand purpose, but how much time do we devote to deeply understanding our own purpose? It wasn’t until Nick Lee lost his wife to bowel cancer that he reflected on his own purpose and reason for being. Nick will inspire your audience to pursue their own sense of purpose and the enrichment that comes from investing in a life that means something.

Building Workplace Connectedness

Connectedness is the ‘invisible thread’ which represents the rapport, engagement and belongingness that staff feel but often find hard to define. It is a major, under-emphasised protective factor for wellbeing in workplaces. This workshop will cover the research behind psychological safety and, most importantly, will provide some specific steps for how to build connectedness within organisations through a specific set of skills and behaviours. This powerful skill-set provides benefits for your team, including greater group cohesion, improved communication and enhanced wellbeing.

Why Are These Programs Important?

While the corporate wellbeing space is inundated with unevaluated interventions, we pride ourselves on our world-leading university research and the ongoing assessment of all that we do. All of our work is based on the latest wellbeing science. We work with you to create a preventive mental health strategy: enhancing the wellbeing, performance and resilience of your workforce.

Healthy Minds takes the sophisticated psychological skills that promote mental health out of the therapy room and into workplaces through tailored personal development programs and seminars.

Developed and delivered by leading psychologists, our evidence-based approaches are designed to be pragmatic, but without watering down the science. We partner with organisations that are looking for mental health programs that don’t stigmatise mental health, but teach the skills required to prevent problems and enhance wellbeing.
